My previous posts on Art in the Streets failed to mention the numerous photographers responsible for documenting street art over the years. Because street art is such a temporary medium, photographers played an integral role in cataloging artists works.
The exhibit pays homage to these photographers and photojournalists, of which Martha Cooper is a standout. MOCA gave her space to showcase her work which catalogued many of graffiti artists of NY in the 70’s while she was a photographer at the N.Y. Post.
I love this behind the scenes video that the folks at Very Nearly Almost captured prior to the show’s opening. Her anthropological perspective is fascinating, and her knowledge of street art is incredibly interesting. Check it out! (plus, you simply can’t go wrong with Souls of Mischief in the background either)
