When I was in college in the 90’s one of my friends would refer to me as a “Hip Hop Connoisseur”. All these years later, I am still a connoisseur and love all aspects of Hip Hop from Turntablism, B-Boy Style, Graffiti Art, Lyricists and of course the music. That’s why I’m interested in checking out the new book by Artist Justin Bua, “The Legends of Hip Hop”. Bua’s roots are in New York where he grew up and saw the evolution of hip hop first hand. He later moved to and studied art in Pasadena where he cultivated his artistic style that is rooted in portraiture. Looking at his work you can see how he was influenced by the late Ernie Barnes.
I really love this piece he did on DJ Qbert. Qbert was THE DJ that everyone aspired to be in the 90’s– he’s an icon of turntablism and Hip Hop in the Bay Area. Qbert’s style is truly cosmic, and if you listen to him you will find that Bua’s rendering is true to form.
