The other day someone shared this Crate Diggers video on J Dilla, one of my favorite hip hop producers who passed away over 7 years ago. The imprint he made on hip hop and soul during his brief, but powerful career is evidenced by the timeless sound he created on his tracks. His body of work is diverse and eclectic; refreshingly, he was the rare producer who didn’t feel compelled to floss and profile in every music video. The love and respect that everyone had for Dilla in this piece is quite touching. We also get a glimpse of the perfectionist and exacting nature of the artist as well. This is an informative and heart-felt tribute that lovers of hip hop should both watch and learn from.
I attempted to pick 5 favorite Dilla tracks.. It’s a virtually impossible task to narrow down, but I will say that the one Dilla track that caught my attention was “Stakes is High” by De La Soul. It is probably one of my favorite songs ever produced.
