I saw Black Panther today and just had to carve out some space here for stellar costume design. Ruth E. Carter’s career spans three decades with over 40 film credits under her belt including School Daze, Malcolm X, Crooklyn, What’s Love Got to Do With It and Selma. Her Afrofuturistic take on the regal, royal robes of Wakanda fuses traditional African patterns and symbols with a modern day Samurai aesthetic.
Carter deployed a team of 100 stylists and designers including jewelry designer Douriean Fletcher whose stunning hardware complimented Carter’s wardrobe design. I was even jealous of the extras who looked straight out of Afropunk. I’m typing this contemplating getting another ticket just to enjoy the costumes again. Go see Black Panther!
