Tom Lloyd’s light art holds a unique position in the history of the Studio Museum of Harlem. When the museum held its first exhibition in 1968, it chose Lloyd’s electronic sculptures in a show titled, Electronic Refractions. According to the museum the work defied expectations as a departure from figurative Black art showing even at its infancy that the museum did not shy away from expanding definitions.
The Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco is currently exhibiting a traveling show featuring some of the Studio Museum’s most iconic works in Black Refractions. I have much more to write about the show, if you are in San Francisco, be sure to check it out.
