I love highlighting photographers on the blog and noticed that in prior year’s Artist a Day posts I focused on the work of Black male photographers, with the one exception being Ming Smith. I thought it was time to highlight current photographers who are forging new paths in fashion photography that radically define redefine how the Black body is rendered within images.

Antwaun Sargent’s book The New Black Vanguard profiles artists across the diaspora whose photography is rooted in the great photographers of the Harlem Renaissance and the Black Arts Movement who broke ground for new work that explores and celebrates identity and inclusion in photography today.

Adrienne Raquel’s photographic style ranges from sharp and clean to lush and richly unctuous (in the most beautiful sense of the word). I also appreciate the cinematic precision of her editorial process. I can’t wait to see more of her photography and directorial work in the future.
