Before Rap Squats became a meme, any musical artist coming out of the 1980’s had to have a perfect album cover pose, and Jamel Shabazz’s photography captured the look. His portraits not only gave us a contemplative look at Brooklyn in the 1980’s and 1990’s, his ability to connect to his photographic subjects results in superb portraits that always bring a smile to my face.

If you aren’t following Shabazz on Instagram what are you waiting for? He nailed street style photography long before the Sartorlialist.

  1. I love love love Jamel Shabazz. I was recently at an art show with emerging artists and one of the artists did a painting modeled after one of his photos. I shared that with him and he loved it!

    1. Love it! Do you remember who the artist was?
